 INTRODUCTIONS, LETTERS AND APPLICATIONS
Section 3

Once you have determined which scholarships you will apply for, write to the granting organization, and ask for their scholarship application and requirements, (or order through online search sites).

The letter can be a general request for information "form" letter that can be photocopied, but you should be specific about the name of the scholarship you are inquiring about on the envelope.

When filling out scholarship application forms, be creative, complete, and concise. Judges reading the applications want to know the real you, not just your name.

Scholarship applications should clearly emphasize your ambitions, motivations, and the idiosyncrasies that make you different from everyone else. Be original!

Contact every source interested in as far in advance of their scholarship deadlines as possible (please include the SASE, it expedites the source's reply, and helps insure their response).

Many of the scholarship search sites listed in The Scholarship & Grant Guide ™ will show you deadlines up front.

A common question asked is, 'once a few scholarship applications have been completed, why not send the same form to all the scholarship sources?'

While most forms request the same general information concerning the school you will enroll in, each application should be treated individually in order to maximize your appeal for that particular award. If you know the rules for each award and then tailor your application for that particular award, it will stand out from all the rest of the applications.

How you fill out that application informs the scholarship selection committee why , of all the other applications received, you alone deserve to win the scholarship.

A few scholarship and/or grant sources may request membership into their organization. The next obvious question would be, do you join the organization to enhance the possibility of your winning a scholarship?

Why not, if that organization relates to your study field, as a membership would keep you up-to-date (informed through e-mail or snail-mail newsletters, transcripts, magazines, etc) concerning current trends and breakthroughs in your field .

It is rare, but a variety of grant and/or scholarship associations, companies, and organizations might extract a promise from you to work for the source for a determined period after graduation.

A prime example is the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund. Since it generates scholarships for $20,000.00, the winner is expected to work within the corporation and complete two years of internships in journalism, broadcasting, or communications.

Students should approach this scholarship with the understanding that they will intern for two years; but this could also result in a permanent job for the student.
